So, I’ve arrived in Ramallah. Moved into my appartment – which is nicer than anything I could afford back home. It has satellite TV, with many, many channels all more or less called Al – somethingarabicsounding. Alas, it does not have internet yet, so I’m in the closest cafe nursing a coke and just barely tolerating the god-awful music they are blasting. As soon as my episode of Top Gear is downloaded I’m out of here, so this shall be rather short.
First thing, upon hearing I was moving to Ramallah for 9 months most people thought I was covering up an unwanted pregnancy in a place similar to Baghdad circa 2003. I am not pregnant, let us make that clear – 9 months is what was proposed to me in my contract. And with a certain worldly smugness I’ll say that I knew Ramallah was not going to be particularly horrible. It is pretty normal, shockingly clean, full to the brim with development aid money and development aid workers, and everyone – development aid worker and Palestinian alike – wants to party. Alas, this is not representative of all of the West Bank, something I’m sure I’ll see through work, when I get to travel through the region.
I start work on Sunday, which is odd, but that’s because the weekend is Friday/Saturday here. Which makes Thursday the new Friday, making Wednesday the new Thursday, but Friday is the new Sunday – because that’s the holy day when everything is closed… which means Saturday remains as Saturday. It’s very confusing, I’ll be honest.
